What are the costs associated with living on a barge / narrowboat in the UK? Hello all. I'm early in the process of buying a barge / barge to England to live and I was wondering if anyone knows about the costs - berths, insurance, etc. .. Thank you very much for all the useful contributions.
I in the U.S. and do not see many of those. Been a few people ask about them. These boats really nice I think.
I came up with a plan. If you send me a barge, I'll live on it and tell you what it cost. :-D
But I guess it is like here in the United States and depends on many factors, such as what you pay for parking. The time I lived on boats, there is not much different than living in a house where a person is all the costs involved, including property taxes. The biggest expense with a ship, when a person is going somewhere. Fuel is the main expense, if you do not sail.
For me, the thought is more oriented toward life and do not go. Thus, the fuel load is like an order for later if you move because of work or family, etc. Most of the time we need to be docked / attached. Then a small boat to go around local.
What I can truly say that I do not know the right places for reasonable expenses Dock. Here in the U.S., I can put one foot in 30 (10 meters) of Anchorage $ 130 per month, then pay for what I want public services, like a house. Thus, this approximately $ 13 USD per meter of length of the boat. Some places charge more, others less. Some no depth of water needed to clear a deep draft boat, then they cheaper and people with a shallow draft to find a bargain.
Good luck, the barge is very pretty. I have one.
Take your time to do a search on the Web in depth to find all the hidden fees partical. Some General ...
The pleasure cruise British Waterways Annual License (57ft boat around £ 570pa, net of discounts for prompt payment) insurance - perhaps £ 250 - £ 500
If this is not "permanently cruise" mooring fees which could be £ 800pa for an "anchor line in rural areas (farmer's field), or perhaps £ 2000pa average .. . .. Marina, or until the "bloody lucky Costa" London area.
Here, in Hinckley, Leicestershire
