MarketplaceHighway Car Insurance Car Insurance - Do you Light Up? Like most if not all of you know, the law has strengthened as regards the use of mobile phone in the car. It has now been illegal for some time to make or receive a call while driving without using a hands-free.
This may have been simply a sign of things to come, as in the revised Highway Code in 2007, smoking has been labeled as a distraction that the police may deem as not allowing proper control of the car. This could lead to a fine or points are given if you are arrested by police after being seen driving dangerously or without due care and attention.
In a study conducted by easurement auto insurance has been found that 45% of smokers who were interviewed focus on lighting up behind the wheel. Of those surveyed, an alarming high amount (68%) admitted not having read the Highway Code since they passed their test.
It appears that a significant number of respondents (80% in fact) to take both their hands on the wheel to light a cigarette. This is potentially very dangerous and the driver's behavior leaves no control over the vehicle in which he or she need.
There were several other hazards identified in the survey, including nearly half of respondents said they abandoned when their conduct of cigarettes and a shock 26% of these people took their eyes of the the road to recovery.
Some 45% of drivers surveyed admitted to throwing their cigarette butts in the car, which could be potentially hazardous if not properly extinguished.
Overall, the survey has highlighted some very disturbing habits when it comes to driving while smoking.
It is interesting to note that non-smokers interviewed only two thirds would support a ban on smoking driver. Perhaps surprisingly, 11% of smokers agree.
It is important to remember that driving while distracted endangers not you, but only the drivers for your companion. If you are caught and given points on your license, you will face an increase in insurance. If you get six points or more, you will find your auto insurance quote can be up to 60%.
The question is can you afford to gamble with your health, personal safety - and wallet - that way?
