Drive safely tow a caravan Caravan holidays are becoming quite popular in the United Kingdom. The credit crunch has seen many people on holiday in the UK and what better way to do that in your hotel room staff on wheels! Caravans have been around for many years and have become so popular that there are many club owners there.
But towing a caravan can change your driving experience completely. You have what is essentially a vehicle as big as a truck which manages more than you expect from your car. Here are some tips to help ensure that your holiday caravan towing experience is safe and you have reached your holiday destination in one piece.
Your car - making sure it is up to
Your car is what will be under the weight of your trailer, so it is not good if your car is a sedan with a small lightweight engine. Driving uphill with a trailer is incredibly demanding and if you want a larger car that was powerful enough - some caravans, roads and destinations may even specifically need a 4x4 vehicle. The RAC recommends the purchase of a caravan which is no heavier than three quarters the weight of vehicle towing it.
Your tow bar - Can it withstand the weight?
connecting your car to the caravan is vitally important. Make sure there is enough room for the hitch to attach. Some cars have removable sections of the rear bumper to allow a trailer to attach securely. Always check the connection before driving and pull slowly, just in case.
You must also ensure that electricity is connected properly on the tractor too. This enables road users can see the lights when driving.
Mirrors - get a better view
With only your car mirrors can easily do their job you know what is happening around you, but with a trailer attached, your order will be severely limited. Therefore, extension mirror must be fitted to your existing car. They usually attach with Velcro and are relatively cheap.
Take the road - driving with care and consideration
Driving with a caravan increases both the length of your vehicle but also the length of time to accelerate. Overflow of long vehicles such as trucks must be done carefully. It will take much longer for you to pass a vehicle when you have a trailer behind always be sure you have enough space and room for overtaking. Also if you drive more slowly than other traffic to give way to other motorists on country roads more pull to keep the flow of mobile traffic.
When driving with a caravan Make sure you are free of distractions and also use your mirrors and signal before any maneuver. As long as you care, you should arrive at your holiday destination, ready to relax and have fun.
